Hither Green Cinema is a not-for-profit and volunteer-led cinema. Currently our main venue is at St Swithun’s Hall but we regularly “pop-up” at alternative and unusual venues throughout the area.
We bring more than just movies to Hither Green. Our objective is to enhance the movie going experience with food and drink, music or introductions by film professionals. We often hold dedicated events for youngsters – and even have the occasional fancy dress opportunity for the grown-ups!
The other aim of the group is to provide a space where local people can come together to see films for the first time, or to see a film again, while meeting other local people. We hope the films will lead to people who otherwise wouldn’t know each other, meeting, enjoying the films and making new friendships.
The group was formed in 2009 to save Hither Green’s original cinema building – The Park Cinema. This was an independently operated cinema that opened in 1913 and closed in 1957. The building has since housed various businesses but continues to be under regular threat of demolition or development.
The Hither Green Cinema group have made several attempts to save, purchase or restore the building – all of which have proved unsuccessful to date. Undeterred, the group continue to utilise local venues to screen films, demonstrate the demand for a local cinema and explore new ways of securing The Park Cinema for future generations.
Anyone can come to our screenings, but booking in advance is recommended to be sure of a place.
